Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for All Skin Types? Dark Skin, Tanned Skin & Fake Tan Explained
"Can I actually have laser if my skin is darker, tanned, or I've just had a spray tan?" It's one of the most common questions we hear at consultation. The honest answer: with the right technology and a proper skin assessment, laser hair removal is suitable for a very wide range of skin tones — but tan and fake tan need to be handled carefully.
Is laser hair removal suitable for all skin types?
Modern laser hair removal can safely treat Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI when the device, wavelength and settings are matched to your skin. That covers very fair, olive, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, South Asian, East Asian and dark African skin tones. The key is the technology — and the therapist reading your skin correctly.
Why older laser technology was more limited
Earlier single-wavelength lasers (and most IPL machines) struggle to tell the difference between the melanin in dark hair and the melanin in dark or tanned skin. That's why they were often unsafe or ineffective on richer skin tones, and why they carried a higher risk of burns, blistering or pigmentation changes.
How Alma Soprano Titanium treats different skin types
At Soraya, we use the Alma Soprano Titanium — a multi-wavelength system designed specifically to treat every skin type comfortably. It fires three wavelengths through a single applicator:
- Alexandrite 755nm — targets shallow, finer and lighter hair
- Diode 810nm — the workhorse wavelength for most hair and skin
- Nd:YAG 1064nm — bypasses surface melanin and is safe on darker and tanned skin
The energy is delivered gradually with DualChill cooling and the larger Quattro handpiece, which keeps the skin surface cool and comfortable while heating the follicle to the treatment temperature.
Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin?
Yes — with the right laser. The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength travels past the surface melanin that gives darker skin its tone and targets the follicle underneath. Combined with In-Motion gliding and continuous cooling, it lets us treat richer skin tones safely and effectively where older devices simply couldn't.
Every new client has a complimentary consultation and free patch test so we can confirm your settings before the first full session.
Can you have laser hair removal with a tan or fake tan?
Naturally darker skin and a tan are not the same thing. A recent sun tan or fake tan sits on the surface and temporarily changes how the laser reads your skin — which can affect both safety and results.
- Sun tan or sunburn — avoid deliberate sun exposure and skip sunbeds for at least 2 weeks before your session
- Fake tan — should be fully removed from the treatment area before your appointment unless your therapist has specifically advised otherwise
- Gradual tanning moisturisers — stop using them on the treatment area at least a week before
Arriving with clean, product-free skin gives us the safest, most effective treatment. If you're not sure, message the clinic before your appointment — we'd rather reschedule than risk a compromised result.
What to do before your appointment
- Shave the treatment area 12–24 hours before your session
- Don't wax, pluck or thread between sessions — the follicle needs to be intact
- Pause retinol, AHAs, BHAs and in-clinic peels on the area for about a week beforehand
- Come in with clean skin — no deodorant, moisturiser, makeup or fake tan on the area
- Avoid caffeine right before if you know you're sensitive
How many sessions will you need?
Most clients complete a course of 6–8 sessions for lasting reduction, with finer facial hair sometimes needing a few more. Facial areas are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart, and body areas around 6–8 weeks apart, to match the hair growth cycle.
