    Pigmentation & Dark Spots

Not all pigmentation is the same. Identifying the type is the first step toward an appropriate plan.

    Understanding pigmentation

Pigmentation appears when melanin is produced unevenly or deposited where it is not wanted. The trigger can be cumulative sun exposure, inflammation from a breakout or injury, hormonal influence, or a combination of these.

Depth matters as much as cause. Pigment sitting closer to the surface generally behaves differently to deeper pigment, and treatments that suit one can aggravate the other. Heat and inflammation can also worsen certain pigmentation types, which is why an aggressive approach is not always the fastest one.

Melbourne's UV levels mean sun protection is part of every pigmentation plan. Without it, results are difficult to hold.

If your pigmentation appears as symmetrical patches across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip, it may be melasma, which is managed differently. Read about melasma

    What you may notice

    • Sun spots and freckling. Defined brown marks on the areas most exposed — cheeks, nose, hands and décolletage.
    • Uneven overall tone. A patchy or muddied appearance rather than distinct spots.
    • Marks after breakouts or irritation. Post-inflammatory pigmentation where the skin has healed.
    • Patches that darken in summer. Pigment that becomes more obvious with sun exposure and fades slightly in winter.
    • Dullness. Skin that looks flat or grey despite a good routine.

    Soraya's approach to pigmentation

We treat the skin in front of us. Pigmentation plans are built around the type of pigment, your skin type and how reactive your skin is.

    01

    Identify the pigmentation type

Sun-related, post-inflammatory and hormonally influenced pigmentation are approached differently. This is the first thing your therapist assesses.

    02

    Consider the risk of rebound

Some skins pigment more readily in response to heat or inflammation. Where that risk exists, we work more conservatively.

    03

Homecare is part of the result

Professional homecare and daily SPF are not optional extras with pigmentation — they protect the work done in clinic.

    04

    Long-term management, not a one-off

Pigmentation can return with sun exposure or hormonal change, so plans include maintenance.

    Treatments that may be considered

Your therapist will discuss which of these fits your pigmentation type and skin.

    Cosmelan

A professional depigmentation program considered for more established or widespread pigmentation.

    DMK Enzyme Therapy

Supports skin function and can form the base of a longer pigmentation plan alongside targeted work.

    BioRePeel

A no-downtime option often considered for surface tone, dullness and mild unevenness.

    Aspect Pigment-Focused Peels

Professional peel options that can be adjusted in strength as tolerance builds.

Which treatment is right for me?

Pigmentation is one of the concerns where the wrong choice can set progress back, so assessment carries real weight:

    • Pigmentation type and likely cause
    • Skin type and tendency to pigment
    • How deep the pigment appears to sit
    • Sun exposure and lifestyle
    • Hormonal factors, including pregnancy or medication
    • Previous treatments and any rebound history
