    Acne Scars & Post-Acne Skin

What clients describe as acne scarring can be several different things. Identifying which one you have is what determines the plan.

Not all acne scarring is the same

The word scarring is used broadly, but the changes left after acne fall into distinct groups. True scarring involves a structural change in the skin, usually depressed marks where tissue did not rebuild evenly. Other changes are textural — a rough or uneven surface without a defined indent.

Separately, many people are actually looking at post-inflammatory marks: brown or pink discolouration where a lesion has healed. These are pigment and redness rather than scar tissue, and they respond to a different approach.

Because these often appear together on the same face, assessment matters more here than on almost any other concern. Depth, distribution, skin type and how long the change has been present all influence what is appropriate.

    What you may be seeing

It is common to have more than one of these at once.

    Depressed or indented scars

Small pitted marks that catch the light, often on the cheeks or temples.

    Uneven texture

A rough or wavy surface without clearly defined indents.

    Post-acne pigmentation

Brown or tan marks where a breakout has healed, more common in deeper skin tones.

    Lingering redness

Pink or red marks that fade slowly over months.

    Enlarged pore appearance

Pores that look more open where the surrounding skin has changed.

    Makeup sitting unevenly

Foundation catching in texture rather than sitting smoothly.

    How we approach post-acne skin

Scar type and severity drive treatment selection here. We would rather stage a plan properly than promise a single fix.

    01

Identify what we are actually treating

Your therapist distinguishes structural scarring from texture and from pigment, because each needs a different pathway.

    02

    Settle active breakouts first

If breakouts are still active, we usually address that before focusing on scarring, so we are not treating a moving target.

    03

Plan in courses, review as we go

Collagen remodelling takes time. Progress is reviewed across a course rather than judged after one session.

    04

    Realistic expectations

Improvement in depth, texture and overall evenness is the goal. We do not promise that scarring will be erased.

    Pathways your therapist may discuss

Selection depends on scar type, skin type and how your skin has responded previously.

    Skin Needling

Most commonly considered for indented scarring and texture, as it works on collagen remodelling over a planned course.

    BioRePeel

Often used for surface texture and tone where downtime needs to be minimal, sometimes alongside a needling course.

    DMK Enzyme Therapy

May be used to improve overall skin function and condition while a scar-focused plan runs.

    Cosmelan

Considered where the main issue is post-acne pigmentation rather than structural scarring.

Which treatment is right for me?

For post-acne skin, these factors carry the most weight:

    • Whether the change is scarring, texture or pigment
    • Scar depth and how widespread it is
    • Skin type and pigmentation risk
    • Whether acne is still active
    • Previous treatments and results
    • Downtime you can accommodate
