    Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

    6 min read ·

It's the question we get more than any other: does laser hair removal hurt? With older IPL and single-wavelength laser systems, the answer was often yes — sharp, snapping sensations like a rubber band against the skin. With the Alma Soprano Titanium we use at both our Prahran and Doncaster East clinics, the experience is dramatically different.

Why the Alma Soprano Titanium feels different

The Soprano Titanium uses Alma's SHR (Super Hair Removal) In-Motion™ technique. Rather than zapping the skin with a single high-energy pulse, the handpiece is glided continuously over the treatment area, gradually heating the hair follicle to the target temperature. The result is a sensation most clients describe as a warm massage.

    Three wavelengths, one pulse

The Soprano Titanium fires three laser wavelengths simultaneously through a single handpiece:

    • Alexandrite 755nm — targets shallow, fine and lighter hair
    • Diode 810nm — the workhorse wavelength for most hair and skin types
    • Nd:YAG 1064nm — penetrates deeper and is safe on darker skin tones

Because the energy is spread across three depths at once, no single layer of skin takes the full hit. That's a big part of why the treatment stays comfortable, even on sensitive areas.

ICE™ cooling keeps the skin calm

The handpiece tip is cooled to around 5°C and held in constant contact with the skin during treatment. This continuous cooling numbs the surface, protects the epidermis and lets us use clinically effective energy levels without the discomfort of older systems.

    What different areas feel like

    • Legs, arms, back, chest — usually the most comfortable, often barely noticeable
    • Underarms and bikini — a warmer sensation but still very tolerable
    • Face and upper lip — mild warmth; sessions are short
    • Brazilian — the most sensitive area, but the gliding technique keeps it manageable for the vast majority of clients

Is it safe for all skin tones?

Yes. The Soprano Titanium is FDA-cleared and clinically proven to safely treat Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI, including darker, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, South Asian and African skin tones that older lasers couldn't treat safely.

Tips to make your session even more comfortable

    • Shave the area 12–24 hours before your appointment
    • Avoid caffeine immediately before your session — it can heighten skin sensitivity
    • Don't apply deodorant, moisturiser or makeup to the treatment area on the day
    • Stay out of the sun and avoid fake tan for at least 2 weeks beforehand

Book a complimentary consultation at our Prahran or Doncaster East clinic and we'll do a free patch test so you can feel exactly what to expect — no commitment required.
