Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do Before and After Your Appointment

Good preparation and aftercare can improve comfort, reduce irritation and help you get the most out of your laser hair removal course. At Soraya Skin Clinic we use the Alma Soprano Titanium at both our Prahran/Windsor and Doncaster East locations — here is everything you need to know before and after your appointment.

    Why preparation and aftercare matter

Laser hair removal is a professional treatment, and a little preparation goes a long way. When you know what to expect and how to care for your skin afterwards, the process feels straightforward and the experience is more comfortable. The steps below are designed to help you feel informed, reassured and confident every step of the way.

What to do before laser hair removal

Following these simple steps before your appointment helps protect your skin and allows the laser to work as effectively as possible.

    • Shave the treatment area around 24 hours before your appointment.
    • Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate before treatment — the laser needs the hair follicle and root to be present in the skin.
    • Avoid tanning, solariums and excessive sun exposure before your session.
    • Avoid fake tan on the treatment area in the lead-up to your appointment.
    • Avoid active skincare ingredients on the treatment area before your session, especially retinoids, exfoliating acids and strong actives.
    • Tell your therapist about medications, recent skin changes, pregnancy, medical conditions, recent sun exposure or previous reactions.
    • Arrive with clean skin and no heavy creams, oils or deodorant on the treatment area where possible.

What happens during a laser hair removal appointment

Knowing what to expect during your session can help you feel relaxed and prepared.

    • Your therapist begins with a consultation and skin/hair assessment to confirm suitability and select appropriate settings.
    • The treatment area is checked and prepared — usually cleansed and shaved if needed.
    • Protective eyewear is provided for both you and your therapist.
    • Laser settings are selected based on your skin type, hair type and the area being treated.
    • The Alma Soprano Titanium is used to target the hair follicle with gentle, gliding pulses.
    • You may feel warmth or a mild snapping/tingling sensation — most clients find it very tolerable.
    • Integrated cooling helps keep the skin surface comfortable throughout the session.
    • Treatment time varies depending on the area — underarms may take minutes, while larger areas take longer.

What is normal after laser hair removal

Every client's skin responds slightly differently. These reactions are common and usually settle quickly.

    • Mild redness, warmth or slight swelling around the follicles can be normal and usually fades within hours.
    • The area may feel similar to mild sunburn for a short time.
    • Hair may appear to shed over the following days to weeks as treated follicles release.
    • Regrowth may become finer, softer or patchier over the course of your treatment plan.
    • Results vary depending on hair colour, skin type, area treated, hormones and treatment consistency.

What to avoid after laser hair removal

Protecting your skin in the first 24–48 hours supports healing and helps you get the best possible results.

    • Avoid direct sun exposure and use SPF 50+ on all exposed areas daily.
    • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for 24–48 hours.
    • Avoid exfoliation, scrubs, retinoids, chemical peels and strong active skincare for at least 48 hours or as advised.
    • Avoid waxing, plucking, threading or epilating between sessions — shaving is fine.
    • Avoid fake tan until the skin has fully settled.
    • Do not pick, scratch or aggressively rub the treated area.

How to care for your skin after laser

Gentle aftercare keeps your skin barrier healthy and comfortable between sessions.

    • Use gentle skincare — fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser if needed.
    • Apply a soothing moisturiser if the skin feels dry or tight.
    • Keep the area cool and protected — loose clothing can help on treated body areas.
    • Use SPF on exposed areas every day, even if you are not spending time in direct sun.
    • Follow your therapist's personalised aftercare instructions — they are tailored to your skin and treatment area.

Can I shave between laser sessions?

Yes. Shaving is usually fine between sessions and is the recommended method to manage regrowth. It keeps the surface smooth without disturbing the follicle beneath the skin. Avoid methods that remove the hair from the root — such as waxing, plucking, threading or epilating — as these interfere with the laser's ability to target active follicles.

When should I book my next session?

Timing depends on the treatment area and your individual hair growth cycle. Facial hair typically grows faster than body hair, so facial sessions may be spaced differently to leg or bikini appointments. Your therapist will recommend a treatment plan based on your skin, hair and goals, and will advise when to return for your next session.

    Why aftercare matters

Good aftercare helps reduce irritation, protects the skin barrier and supports a safer, more comfortable treatment journey. When you follow the pre- and post-treatment guidance, your skin is in the best possible condition for each session — which can contribute to smoother, more consistent results over your course.
