Fat Freezing Melbourne: What to Expect (2026 Guide)
Fat freezing — also known as cryolipolysis — has become one of the most requested non-surgical body contouring treatments in Melbourne. If you've been researching fat freezing Melbourne clinics and want a straight-talking guide to how it actually works, what results are realistic, and what to expect on the day, this article walks you through everything we cover with clients at Soraya Skin Clinic Prahran.
What is fat freezing?
Fat freezing is a non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling to target and destroy stubborn fat cells in specific areas of the body. The fat cells are frozen at a precise temperature that damages them without harming the surrounding skin, nerves or muscle. Over the following 8 to 12 weeks, your body naturally clears the treated cells through the lymphatic system.
It is designed for pinchable pockets of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise — think lower abdomen, love handles, bra fat, inner thighs, arms or under the chin. It is not a weight-loss treatment and it is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
How does cryolipolysis actually work?
Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin, blood vessels or nerves around them. When the treatment area is cooled to the target temperature, the fat cells crystallise and begin a process called apoptosis — a natural, programmed cell death. Over the following weeks, your lymphatic system gradually flushes the damaged cells out of the body, and the treated area becomes visibly slimmer and smoother.
At our Prahran clinic we use the CoolSlimming Ultimate 360° device, which cools the treatment area from multiple angles at once. Compared to older single-plate applicators, 360° cooling treats more of the fat pocket per session and tends to give a smoother, more even result.
Is fat freezing right for me?
Fat freezing works best for people who are close to their goal weight but have a stubborn area that won't shift. The ideal candidate:
- Has a pinchable pocket of fat in a specific area
- Is within roughly 10–15kg of their goal weight
- Has realistic expectations — this is body contouring, not weight loss
- Is committed to maintaining results with a stable lifestyle
It is not suitable during pregnancy, or for anyone with certain cold-related conditions. Every new client at Soraya has a complimentary consultation so we can confirm suitability before booking.
What to expect on the day of treatment
A typical fat freezing session at our Prahran clinic takes around 45 to 60 minutes per area. Here's the flow:
- Consultation and area mapping — we photograph and mark the treatment zone
- A gel membrane is applied to protect your skin
- The 360° applicator is placed and gently suctions the area into the cup
- The first few minutes feel intensely cold, then the area goes numb
- You can relax, read or scroll on your phone for the rest of the session
- The applicator is removed and the area is massaged to break up crystallised fat cells
There is no downtime. Most clients drive themselves home and return to work, the gym or dinner plans the same day.
When will I see results?
This is the question we get most often. Fat freezing does not give instant results — your body needs time to clear the treated cells. A typical timeline looks like:
- Weeks 1–3 — the treated area may feel firm, tender or slightly swollen
- Weeks 4–6 — early changes start to become visible
- Weeks 8–12 — full results appear, with continued gradual improvement out to 16 weeks
Most clients see a noticeable reduction after one session. For more stubborn areas, we usually recommend a course of 2 to 3 sessions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart.
How much does fat freezing cost in Melbourne?
Pricing depends on the number of applicators and areas treated in a session. Single-area sessions start from an accessible price point, and package pricing is available for clients treating multiple areas or committing to a full course. The best way to get an accurate quote is a short in-clinic consultation — we'll assess the area, confirm how many applicators are needed, and give you a fixed price.
Fat freezing vs liposuction vs weight loss injections
Fat freezing sits in a very specific niche: non-surgical, no downtime, targeted spot reduction. Liposuction is more aggressive, more expensive and requires surgery and recovery. Weight loss injections work systemically across the whole body, not on specific pockets. Fat freezing is the right choice when you like your body overall but want to sculpt one or two stubborn areas.
