Does Fat Freezing (Cool Slimming) Hurt?
Fat freezing — also called cool slimming or cryolipolysis — is a non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling to permanently destroy fat cells in stubborn areas. One of the most common questions we hear at our Prahran clinic — the only Soraya location offering fat freezing — is simple: does it actually hurt?
The short answer
No, fat freezing is not considered a painful treatment. It's uncomfortable for the first 5–10 minutes, then the area goes numb and most clients relax, scroll their phone or even nap for the rest of the session.
How fat freezing works
An applicator suctions a section of fat into a cooling chamber and holds it at a precise temperature that crystallises fat cells without damaging your skin, nerves or muscle. Over the following weeks your lymphatic system clears the destroyed cells, and the result is permanent — those specific cells don't grow back.
What it actually feels like, minute by minute
- 0–2 minutes: strong suction pulls the area into the applicator — a firm tugging sensation
- 2–10 minutes: intense cold, sometimes described as stinging or aching, as the area cools
- 10–60 minutes: the area is numb — you'll feel nothing for the rest of the cycle
- Post-treatment massage (2–3 minutes): the most intense part for some clients, but brief — we knead the frozen area to break down the crystallised fat cells and boost results
After your session
The treated area may feel tender, swollen, slightly bruised or numb for a few days to a couple of weeks. You can return to normal activities and exercise straight away — there is no downtime.
How many sessions you'll need
Each session can reduce up to 28% of fat cells in the treated area. Most clients see visible results from 6 weeks, with full results around 12 weeks. Depending on your goals, we may recommend 1–3 sessions per area, spaced 6–8 weeks apart.
Who fat freezing suits
- Stubborn pockets of fat that don't shift with diet or exercise — abdomen, flanks, back, inner thighs, arms, double chin
- Clients close to their goal weight wanting targeted shaping
- Anyone wanting a non-surgical alternative to liposuction with no downtime
Fat freezing isn't a weight-loss treatment — it's a body contouring treatment. If you'd like to know whether it's right for you, book a complimentary consultation at our Prahran clinic on Chapel Street, or read our full fat freezing Melbourne guide.
